Kickoff Courses

Discover the story behind this course: how FC Barcelona built a Methodology Department that unified the whole club around one way of understanding football, and the two people from that journey who deliver this course, Xavier Damunt and Marc Quintana. This is not about copying a club. It is about a new way to observe, understand and teach the game.

Welcome to the Course: Your Journey Starts Here

Module 0: Introduction To The Course

Start with the question most coaches never ask out loud: what does "a good player" actually mean? In this module you will discover what a football methodology really is (and what it is not), the core concepts behind it, and why a coach's real job is teaching, not just training. Then your story begins: you are invited to an interview at ForeFront FC, where you will explain your view of methodology to the club's management.

Module 1 Check: How Well Do You See the Game?

Module 1: Foundations of Football Methodology

Before you can change how a team plays, you have to learn how to see it. And at ForeFront FC, that starts on your very first day, when the club asks you not to coach, but to watch.

Here, nobody looks at lines, positions or transitions. They look at relationships: how players relate to the ball, to each other, and above all, their intentions. Most coaches analyse football. In this module, you learn to observe it.

You will watch real match moments through the club's eyes, discover why a team should want the ball instead of fearing it, and meet the idea that holds everything together: the Game Idea. Then the ForeFront Football team takes you inside game observation itself, reading every moment through the five elements of the phase space.

By the end of this module, you will see things on the pitch that most coaches never notice. And you will never watch a match the same way again.

Module 2: Learning to See - Observation and the Game Idea

You spend hours drawing the perfect plan. You train the patterns all week. Then the whistle blows, the opponent does something you did not expect, and the plan disappears in minutes.

This is the module where everything changes. You will discover why the traditional Game Model, a fixed playbook of positions and patterns, keeps failing in real matches, and replace it with something far more powerful: a living Game Idea, built on shared intentions instead of fixed roles.

You will learn to read the game the way it really behaves: not like a clock, but like the weather. You will meet the phase space, the four elements that define every moment of a match, and understand why your influence as a coach really lives in the next two seconds, not the next ten minutes.

Almost everything after this module is built on this one shift. Master it, and you stop coaching a machine. You start coaching a team that thinks.

Game Model vs Game Idea: Why Playbooks Fail

Module 3 Check

Module 3: From Playbook to Game Idea

You have learned to observe the game. You have understood why a playbook fails and a Game Idea lives. Now comes the real test: building one of your own.

This is the module where theory becomes yours. You will discover why no Game Idea can be copied and pasted from one club to another, and how your club's culture and your players' identity shape the idea before you even write it. You will learn the difference that changes how you see every match, advantages versus superiorities, and the two basic intentions that hold Locational Play together: keep the ball and disorganise the opponent.

Then you will meet the 3Rs, Relocation, Redistribution and Recovery, the operational language of Locational Play, and watch them live at match speed with the ForeFront Football team.

You will leave this module with something no other course gives you: the first page of your own Game Idea.

Module 4 Check

Module 4: Locational Play: Build Your Own Game Idea

You have written the first page of your Game Idea. But if you read it to your players tomorrow like a memo, would anything change? Probably not. Because a Game Idea is not installed by announcing it. It is installed through how you treat the people who have to live it, every single day.

This module is about the side of coaching most courses ignore: leadership. You will discover the two ways every coach leads, transactional and transformational, why reward-and-punishment coaching quietly works against how players actually learn, and which habits you may have inherited without noticing.

Then you will learn how transformational coaches actually talk: active listening, a culture of participation, mistakes as a training tool, and the immersive training context where players learn fastest. You will also watch a real coach lead his team in a live match moment.

This is the module where your players stop obeying you, and start following you.

Module 5 Check: How You Lead

Module 5: How You Lead: From Instructions to Influence

Every session plan you have ever written contains a hidden decision: are you giving players a script to execute, or a problem to solve? Most coaches never notice they are choosing.

This is the most hands-on module of the course, and the technical foundation for every session you will ever plan. You will learn how ForeFront designs training tasks so players adapt and solve problems themselves, instead of following the coach's pre-made solution.

You will discover Preferential Simulation Situations, the alternative to repetition-based training, and the idea of "repetition without repetition". You will learn the variability rule, backed by real research, that tells you exactly what to keep loose and what to leave alone. And you will design with constraints: shaping space, rules, scoring and even your own presence as a coach, so the right behaviours emerge on their own.

You will rewrite a real session plan three times. By the end, you will design training that teaches, not just training

Module 6 Check: How You Build the Task

Module 6: How You Build the Task: Designing Training That Teaches

You can design a brilliant task, then take all its freedom back with a few words from the touchline. Most coaches never notice they are doing it.

This module puts the two dials of coaching side by side: how you build the task, and how you intervene while it runs. You will learn ForeFront's four levels of task design, from Obliged to Constrained, and four levels of intervention, from Instructor to Generator. Then you will discover the rule that changes how you see every session: your players' real freedom is decided by the weaker of the two, never the average.

You will see how these levels trace the history of football coaching, from pattern plays to the Game Idea, and why the top level is Locational Play brought to the training pitch. Then you will learn the thirteen habits of a Generator coach: what to say, when to stay silent, and how to build tasks that invite exploration.

By the end, you will know which link is weak in your coaching, and exactly how to fix it.

Module 7: How You Coach It Live: Task Design Meets Intervention

Every pass your team makes is a message. It has to be perfectly clear to a teammate, and completely unreadable to the opponent standing right next to him. This final module shows you how a team pulls that off.

You will discover the predictability paradox at the heart of team communication, and what ForeFront calls assertive-motor communication: how players speak through body orientation, runs and timing without saying a word. You will learn the three properties of Locational Play that keep opponents guessing, why it chooses a good-enough pass over the perfect one, and why empathy matters as much for the receiver as for the sender.

Then you will meet the D/U potential, a way to measure how unpredictable a team or a single player really is, and the idea of the universal player.

Finally, you will bring all eight modules together into one finished document: your own Game Idea, ready to hand to your staff and your players on Monday.
